Hand Made Solid Wood Shoji Screens

(pronounced "show-gee") a lightweight translucent panel originally used in Japanese homes to divide up interior space.

Contemporary or traditional screens available in a range of room dividers and wardrobes. We offer the highest quality materials and craftsmanship. Whether sliding, fixed or folding, each screen is handmade to our client’s specific dimensions and finish requirements.

a shoji screen is both style and simplicity, form and function, light and easy to move.

One aspect of these versatile screens is the flexibility to divide one big room in several ways to create different areas of use: open them to create a sense of space, and close them to create a more intimate or private environment.

Divide a studio apartment space into separate living areas; split a kitchen/diner into two private and functional 'independent' spaces - open while you are cooking, closed while you are dining and entertaining guests; create a separate office space in a room used for more than one purpose; formulate a fully adjustable walk in wardrobe to a bedroom to suite all your storage requirements.

Construction

Each shoji panel is individually hand crafted from solid wood: no nails are ever used in the frame’s construction.  The delicate translucence of the paper draws on and enhances the use of light, both natural and artificial, the paper, is very strong and virtually weightless.
Shoji consists of a frame and lattice work panel of interwoven slats called kumiko. Although the kumiko look delicate, they become very strong when combined with the timber lattice.

Finishes

Maple, Oak, Beech, Cherry, Birch, Walnut, Wenge and Mahogany hardwoods create a richness that deepens with age. While other furnishings may in time become dated, the purchase of shoji screens is a timeless design investment. Using Hand rubbed oil and wax colours that won't chip, crack, peel or fade. Lacquer finishes are applied in successive coats with hand-sanding between coats.
Shoji paper was made from Japanese mulberry trees and called 'Washi'. Today's manufacturing processes have now created more versatile and stronger papers.

Lattice work Choices (Kumiko)

You can even create your own lattice designs carefully constructed by our skilled craftsmen. The fewer intersections you have in your grid work pattern, the less expensive the screen. Single-sided screens are cheaper than double sided

History

Traditionally Japanese houses had open interiors and people sectioned off areas by using fabric, paper and wood. During this period folding screens, roll up bamboo blinds and free standing screens were all called Shoji. Folding screens had many functions and were used for tea ceremonies, as backdrops for concerts and dances and outdoor processions. Today folding screens and floor to ceiling screens are found in most homes and are very popular in restaurants and izakayas (taverns, pubs).
